Descripción : Mortiño (Vaccimiun floribundum Kunth) is an endemic fruit from the paramos of Ecuador, distributed through the Andes Mountains. Mortiño is a red fruits, which are characterized by the presence of bioactive compounds with important such as anthocyanins. The objective of this research was to study the chemical composition and the antioxidant capacity of the mortiño from the three paramos of Ecuador. Chemical characterization of the principals phenolic compounds was carried out using through the high pressure liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (HPLC/MS), while the antioxidant capacity was determined by the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and DPPH method of antioxidant assay. Mortiño from Pichincha showed a higher concentration of bioactive compounds compared to the fruits of the other two regions. It was also demonstrated that Mortiño showed a variety of polyphenolic compounds such as anthocyanins (cyanidin hexoside, cyanidin pentoside, aglycone of cyanidin, delofonidin derivates), proanthocyanins (dimer of GC-epicatechin) and flavonoids (derivatives of the hydroxybenzoic acid and hydroxycinnamic acid). On the other hand, from the antioxidant capacity analysis high values were evidentiated for the biological property, which allows us to indicate that Mortiño could be consider as an important natural source of bioactive compound with relevant effects for health.
