Descripción : Context: The following paper is based on determining the cost-effectiveness of the use of zinc as a complementary treatment on patients with pre-diabetes, which is preventing the disease, and on patients suffering from type 2 diabetes, avoiding complications. Analizing the statistics, we realize a projection, of what the health system could save the amount spend by using zinc as the complementary treatment. This information was gathered by evaluating medical scientific articles, in which the possible benefits of the use of zinc on patients with pre-diabetes as well as type 2 diabetes are certified. General Objective: Decreasing the costs occasioned by type 2 diabetes through including zinc as a complementary treatment. Methods: We realized a study of cost – effectiveness. Results: In the last three years of 2010 to 2012 a total of 3.647 patients were treated in the C.A.A de Chimbacalle IESS, who occasioned costs of 420.188 dollars through medical exams, consultations and medication of doctor. The prevention with zinc and the adaptations on the diet have an effectiveness of 22.6 per cent, which would have saved spending 353.313 dollars between the years of 2010 and 2012. Conclusion: We draw the conclusion that the use of zinc as the complementary treatment on patients with pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes is the most effective way. Firstly, because it reduces the percentage of patients, who develop this disease, and secondly, like a protector, it avoids complications when patients already suffer from type 2 diabetes.
