Descripción : This paper focuses its study on the use of chrome shaving, which is a solid waste generated in the tannery, to remove contaminants such as total chromium, real color, settle able solids, oil and fats; for wastewater tanning, dyeing and beam house operations, respectively. The removal is based on chemical adsorption and physical absorption of pollutants described above with the chrome shaving. This kind of studies have received much attention in recent years due to the revaluation of industrial wastes and the innovation of the project. The study presented different variables such as the amount of chrome shaving, chemical modification, and pH of the wastewater, wastewater volume and hydraulic retention time; with which a factorial experimental design was performed for its subsequent statistical analysis. The removal obtained was remarkable for total chromium 99.24 percent; for real color 97.20 percent; for settle able solids 99.31 percent; for oil and fats 93.26 percent. However, none of these parameters fulfilled with the acceptable concentration range given by the Ecuadorian legislation The study concludes that chrome shaving is an alternative to the removal of pollutants by the amphoteric properties of its internal chemical structure, because it has functional groups such as amino group (NH3+) and carboxyl group (COOH-) which help to uptake trivalent chromium ions and color dyes. Also, its physicochemical properties (granulation and hydrophobic affinity) help to remove contaminants sparingly soluble in water such as settle able solids, oil and fats.
