Resumen : Evaluar el efecto en el pH salival del blanqueamiento casero con peróxido de carbamida al 22 por ciento...
Descripción : This study aimed to evaluate the effect on salivary pH of home bleaching with 22%carbamide peroxide. Material and Methods: This crosssectional study evaluated 10 volunteer who used the bleaching agent (Whiteness Perfect 22%) in a custom tray for 2 hours per day during10 days. Salivary pH was measured with ultra-sensitive strips at different moments: before treatment, after 5 min, 15min and 2 hours of the use of the bleaching agent, and 15 min after the end of the treatment. This procedure was repeated in the 10 sessions. The severity of tooth sensitivity was evaluated in each treatment session using a questionnaire that included VAS scale and 5-point scale. Data was analyzed with the Friedman and ji-cuadrado (p < 0.05). Results: Salivary pH increased after 15 min of use of the bleaching agent (7.2 ± 0.2) compared to the initial pH (6.9 ± 0.1). After the 2 hours of the bleaching agent use and 15 min after removing the tray, salivary pH remained stable (6.9 ± 0.2, 6.9 ± 0.1, respectively), similar to the pH after the first 5 min of the treatment (7.145 ± 0.20). All patients reported spontaneous sensitivity at least once during the treatment. The teeth most affected were the mandibular central incisors, followed by the maxillary lateral incisors. Conclusion: Salivary pH increased significantly after the 15 min of bleaching agent use and for the rest of the treatment the pH decreased and stabilized the next 15 form the bleaching treatment ended.
