| Descripción : | The provision of banking products and services to the low-income population is an exercise with positive benefits for financial institutions. By nature, cooperative banking exploits those benefits by focusing its activities on microfinance. Commercial banks, on the other hand, face the dilemma of incurring (or not) in the credit downscaling process. The questioning of this research revolves around the relationship between the cooperative system and traditional banking when operating in low-income segments of the population. The hypothesis proposed implies that, due to the expansion in the granting of credits by the cooperative system, private banks increase their credit placement in the low-income segment of the population. The panel data model used exhibits a behavior contrary to what was expected, since it is evident that the cooperative system exerts pressure on the placement of private banks, generating a crowding out effect. |
