Descripción : Charapa turtles (Podocnemis unifilis) are a species of chelonios, which is on the red list of endangered species in Ecuador, where it has begun to carry out monitoring and conservation programs in order to mitigate their current status, focusing mainly on the Yasuni National Park, located in the provinces of Orellana and Pastaza; This program was specifically established in the New Providence, Sani Isla and Indillama communities. However, the conservation program has several shortcomings, because, in the last phase, which consists in the release of animals, a recognition of the animal's health status is not carried out, since there is no veterinarian to charge of performing this work. Thus, due to this particular, it was decided to carry out a macroscopic study of the gastrointestinal tract in 30 juveniles in 2018 in order to determine the health status of the animals, analyzing the tongue, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine and cloaca; the same one that did not present any abnormality and to confirm these results the present work had as objective to carry out a microscopic study of the gastrointestinal tract and confirm that the health status of the animals is normal. In this way, from the organs studied, a total of 100 histological samples were processed, which belong 34 to New Providence, 33 to Sani Island and 33 to Indillama. These samples were submitted to a histopathological study, which determined normal tissues, without the presence of any alteration, so that the normal state of health of the gastrointestinal system of the animals could be confirmed. Thus, this study provides relevant information regarding the normal histological parameters of the gastrointestinal tract of semiaquatic turtles; In addition to serving as a basis for future studies related to the species studied.
