| dc.description | The term “albinism” comes from the Latin word albus which means “white” (Robins, 2005, p.139). Albinism is a genetically inherited skin disease, in which the amount of melanin pigment is reduced and, for this reason, it can manifest in the eyes, hair or skin. The albinos have vision problems, whose percentage varies according to the degree of disability that is given according to the type of albinism (there are two). People who suffer from this condition become vulnerable to being or feeling isolated due to ignorance, in some cases, and in others, scarce information on the subject. In Ecuador, albinism is considered a rare disease and there is no specific number by INEC of how many people suffer from this condition. As a result of this isolation in the country, communities that integrate albinos have been created, with the aim of being legally recognized as a group with disabilities. In this way, they claim to have access to medical care that allows them to access a special and adequate protection system, thus preventing them from developing skin cancer that can eventually be fatal. This research proposes a journalistic approach to the way in which these people live in Ecuador, the typology of their condition, the treatment and the statistical information that is available. In addition, it proposes to identify the institutions and social actors that are involved in its treatment and daily life. | en |
