dc.description | Since ancient times, honey has been used in traditional medicine for its antiinflammatory, antibacterial, healing and therapeutic properties, being used in small animal practice as a collaborator in the healing of different types of wounds. This study was designed using a monofloral honey from the Andean region of Ecuador, avocado honey (Persea americana) to determine its physicochemical parameters and to investigate its ability to inhibit and reduce in vitro the development of bacterial biofilms in a gram positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram negative (Klebsiella pneumoniae). Physicochemical analysis revealed that the values were within the international standards proposed for tropical honeys, except the electrical conductivity (mS-cm) and the ash content (percent) that were out of these ranges, which are characteristic for this honey type. The antimicrobial activity of honey was also determined by analyzing the hydrogen peroxide content and its ability to inhibit the formation of biofilms as well as to eliminate preformed biofilms. The values of hydrogen peroxide in avocado honey were higher than those previously reported in literature for honeys from other geographical and floral origin. Likewise, a high capacity to inhibit the formation of biofilms was demonstrated, as well as the elimination of preformed biofilms in Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae. After analyzing the results, it was concluded that avocado honey possesses antibacterial properties capable to remove the preformed biofilm of Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae, as well as a greater capacity to inhibit the in vitro formation of bacterial biofilms. | en |
