Head and neck cancer is a disease that compromises several structures in this region, and therefore can cause functional and aesthetic effects. In most cases is diagnosed in advanced stages, so it is considered a challenging disease. The conventional methods for the diagnosis are aggressive and incapable of detecting it at an early stage, so is important to develop new diagnostic methods based on the search of biomarkers. The microRNAs are small sequences of non-coding single-stranded RNA capable of regulating the expression of target genes in biological processes such as cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis. Also, are involved in the development of diseases such as cancer. The objective of this investigation was to validate five previously identified miRNAs, comparing their expression from the saliva of fifty five patients with neck and head cancer, and fifty healthy individuals using real-time PCR, and compared the presence of these miRNAs with studies in other populations. A panel of biomarkers of four miRNAs with statistically significant p values (p <0.05) were obtained from a t-student test: miR-92a (p = 0.0025), miR-124 (p=0.0077), miR-122 (p=0.0001), miR-146a (p=0.0387). However, miR-205 did not present a statistically significant value (p=0.7546). In conclusion, this panel of four miRNAs can be used as biomarkers in the diagnosis of neck and head cancer using saliva as diagnostic fluid. These miRNAs did not show differences in their regulation in studies performed in other populations, except miR-92a, which was deregulated in Brazilian individuals.en
