The presence of disease in amphibians in captivity is common, one of the main is edema syndrome. This problem has been diagnosed in Gastrotheca spp. frogs species. This study was performed on 10 individuals including the Gastrotheca riobambae species, Gastrotheca litonedis and Gastrotheca pseustes the same that were donated by the Center for Research and Conservation “Balsa de los Sapos”. The purpose of this study was to characterize lesions found in lung, heart, kidney, skin, spleen, liver and reproductive organs. A series of processes were developed including the selection of animals, general physical examination, assessing their health status, measuring external and internal temperature of the terrarium, determination of the distance between mouth and cloacae in millimeter (mm), weight in grams (g), abdominal circumference measurements (mm), in addition to euthanasia, necropsy and histological plates reading. At the end of the study macroscopic and microscopic alterations were identify in all animals corresponding mostly to vascular, cell, degenerative inflammatory lesions, and development chronic and acute infectious. This is supported by the findings in some of these organs, which were the presence of parasitic, fungal and bacterial forms. The information collected in this study is important, since there are not investigations on pathology in amphibians in Ecuador. This limits, to appropriate clinical management in amphibians kept in captivity. This research will become an important pathological collection of amphibians that can be used as a reference in Ecuador, for the development of protocols health and population management amphibians in captivity that are in danger of extinction or not.en
