dc.descriptionThe struggle of the feminist movements for the decriminalization of abortion in Ecuador through political protest, lobbying and discourse, as opposed to the State and the self described pro-life groups, is the main issue in this research paper. The qualitative method draws from interviews with different sectors of society that contributed distinct criteria about the challenges of criminalizing abortion. From a discursive and collective action analysis as theoretical perspectives from a liberal point of view, the urgency of addressing this demand, the vulnerability of the contexts in which clandestine abortions are carried out, and the influence of Christian values along with the lack of political will as factors that have impeded the scope of legalization, are evident. These results demonstrate that the issue transcends a political or religious debate, but involves public health and social justice dimensions. The key contribution of the research is that it confirms the capacity of social movements to transform the normative and the public opinion.
