This study contributes to the current debate on abortion in Ecuador. Based on a tripartite methodology conceptions regarding abortion are studied drawing on a discourse analysis of Rafael Correa and Lenin Moreno (2007-2017 and since 2017, respectively) according to their political context. In addition, women activists´ testimonies were collected during June 2019, in order to analyze the correlation between the political leaders´ public discourses with the participation of women´s movements during Correa´s and Moreno´s presidencies. During 2013-2019, advocates in favor of abortion in cases of rape have attempted to debate the decriminalization of abortion in cases of rape in the National Assembly. First, the essay emphasizes that the State and Church continue influencing the decisions about women´s sexuality. Second, the opportunity to discuss abortion does not depend on any political ideology, but on the political context and cost, as well as the given power relations. Third, the position on abortion neither depends on any ideology but on the personality and style of government linked to the respective president. Fourth, it shows conceptual taxonomies that correspond to feminist theory such as patriarchy, which characterize each political leaders´ stance regarding abortion. Finally, the differences regarding the openness to discuss abortion in cases of rape in governmental instances and in their relation with women´s movements. Correa´s speech against the decriminalization of abortion dominates the political scene, while Moreno does not have a position on abortion. In addition, this essay demonstrates the necessity for women movements for constantly reorienting their strategies with regard to the changing political circumstances.en
