dc.descriptionNowadays, land use change is a global problem that directly affects aquatic ecosystems, modifying their hydromorphology and water quality. These alterations bring negative effects for the population since ecological functions are reduced and the use of water resources is unsafe. The objective of this study was focused on determining the relationship between the variation in land use in drainage areas and the quality of the San Pedro riverbank forest over the amount of coarse benthic organic matter and the functional food groups of aquatic macroinvertebrates. The results showed that agro-livestock areas and urban settlements cause a decrease in biodiversity, ecological degradation in the riparian corridor and variation in the dynamics of organic matter in rivers. With these information, it was determined that conservation at the landscape level is just as important as conservation of the riparian corridor since the recovery of riparian vegetation is not sufficient to restore the ecological functions of an aquatic ecosystem. It is therefore necessary to implement corrective measures to return better quality services to the population.en
