dc.description | The turnip honey was analyzed to determine its floral origin, chemical composition, physical-chemical parameters, antioxidant capacity and its ability to inhibit the in vitro formation of bacterial biofilms by Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae. According to the obtained results, the turnip honey showed values within the range established by the International Honey Commission for tropical honeys for the physico-chemical parameters. The content of bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, carotenoids, free amino acids and total polyphenols was within the values previously reported by other authors for turnip honey from other geographical regions. Turnip honey was also able to protect cell membranes against induced oxidative damage, demonstrating its potential as an antioxidant agent. A positive correlation was found between color, chemical composition and antioxidant capacity. This allows us to corroborate the hypothesis posed by other researchers who have proposed a positive correlation between chemical composition and biological properties in honey. Turnip honey also showed significant values of hydrogen peroxide content and was able to reduce bacterial biofilms in vitro. In conclusion, turnip honey complies with the international quality standards required for honeys of the bee species Apis mellifera and represents an important natural source of bioactive compounds with important beneficial effects for health. | en |
