dc.description | The Barf diet was developed in 1980 by veterinarian Ian Billinghurst, seeking to adapt the hunter-prey model in domestic canines by feeding them unprocessed food. It has been described that this mode of feeding is beneficial for domestic dogs and that their diet should be based on what a wolf or a wild canid would eat even if their physiology and nutrition are different. The objective of the present study was to determine, by means of two groups, of 10 individuals each, of domestic canines the difference between the apparent digestibility of the premium commercial balanced and the unprocessed food, in crude protein and crude fiber during a period of 4 days of sampling after 7 days of adaptation to the food. Analyzing stool samples from each of the animals, it was found that the apparent digestibility of crude protein and crude fiber of the Barf food was 97.37 percent and 97.46 percent respectively, while in the Premium food it was 95.01 percent and 90.16 percent respectively. Through a statistical test of T test of paired samples, it was determined that there is no significant difference in the level of apparent digestibility of protein or fiber between both foods with a p value less than 0.05, which rejects the hypothesis that there is a difference in the apparent digestibility of crude protein and crude fiber in food. Having as a general conclusion of the study that the Barf diet has certain differences with commercial balancing and that an individual analysis of the animal must be carried out before providing this diet. | en |
