dc.description | The turtles charapas (Podocnemis unifilis) are a species in vulnerable state, for this reason it is important to start programs to mitigate in the state that these chelonians are found; In Ecuador, a monitoring and conservation program is carried out for these turtles in the Yasuní National Park, specifically in three communities: Sani Isla, Nueva Providencia and Indillama. However, the last phase of this program, which is the release, is not carried out under the supervision of a veterinarian and it is unknown in the state of health in which these turtles have been released. As a result of this, it was decided to perform a macroscopic study of the gastrointestinal system in these turtles. Ten turtles were collected from each community already mentioned (population for this study, n equal to 30), of each animal was collected tongue, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine and cloaca. There was no lesion in the gastrointestinal tract, with each organ remaining normal at the macroscopic level. With these results, although it is not possible to affirm a normal state of health of these turtles, it is necessary to perform other tests such as hematological and histopathological, in addition to an analysis of the place where the breeding takes place and verify their diet in order to make a more accurate evaluation. This study gives important information about the normal anatomical parameters of the gastro-intestinal tract of semi-aquatic turtles in a state of vulnerable conservation; in addition, they become a reference in Ecuador, as there are no studies of this type, besides it is a base for next studies that can be done in this species | en |
