Descripción : In Ecuador, catastrophic, orphan and rare diseases are the leading cause of death. According to data from the World Health Organization, in 2008 there were 36 million deaths due to a chronic disease of which the majority were women and also people under 60 years of age. For the 2013-2015 period, the INEC data affirm that there were 251 admissions to different hospitals in Ecuador due to malignant tumors and 33 people were treated for presenting renal failure. The first option for these people to be served is through the IESS, but in the period 2010-2014 the government had the obligation to deliver to this institution a total of 34.3 million dollars, which was not delivered. Because of this debt that the State maintains with the IESS, patients can not receive the treatments or medications that by law should be treated primarily. What this journalistic investigation proposes is to know the current situation of the regulation and treatment of catastrophic, orphan or rare diseases in Ecuador. As part of the theoretical framework, this research presents the state of the art where different academic research within the country has been developed and analyzed on treatments for catastrophic, orphan or rare diseases in Ecuador and their respective regulations. With respect to the theoretical framework will be treated concepts such as: illness, health, types of diseases worldwide, catastrophic diseases, orphan diseases, rare diseases, quality of life among others. The research contains its respective methodological design that will be carried out from a qualitative approach and the main technique for the investigation will be the interview. The main sources will be Ministers, directors of public and private hospitals, lawyers, testimonies, all related to the research topic.
