dc.description | US foreign policy in the Bush Administration prioritized the Middle East. However, with the arrival of Obama to the presidency, the policy shifted towards East Asia. This change of priorities is called "the pivot." This study seeks to analyze the achievements and challenges of the US in relation to the six objectives of the pivot, established by former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2011. The investigation uses qualitative analysis that is based on the balance of power theory by Morgenthau and Waltz and the methods for accumulation of power by Morgenthau. The study clearly shows the existence of two great nation-states -United States and China-, who through military, commercial, and political alliances have made efforts to influence East Asian countries in order to consolidate their power. In fact, the US has been successful in meeting several objectives of the pivot policy, which focus on strengthening security alliances, economic cooperation, and participation in multilateral organizations within the region. | en |
