Descripción : Objectives: This research had as a general objective to know the status of gingival health with regard to the presence of biofilm and dental crowding in children of 6 to 12 years old, according to this; specific objectives were planted: calculate the index of biofilm, determine the presence of gingivitis, identify the prevalence of dental crowding and specify the crowded segment most affected. Methods: To conduct the study at first instance it was necessary to design a form for data collection, after that, the procedure was to take the sample at the Center of Dental Care, University of The Americas, the sample consisted of 80 children (55 percent female and 45 percent male), between 6 (22 percent), 7 (21 percent), 8 (7 percent), 9 (13 percent), 10 (19 percent), 11 (9 percent) and 12 (9 percent) years old, randomly selected and attending exclusively for a dental prophylaxis appointment, the following step after the acceptance from the parents was to examine the children, scoring the data in the formulary of the gingival evaluation, IHOS and dental crowding. Results: The presence of gingivitis was observed in most of the population (61 percent), also in these patients the biofilm index was 2, otherwise the index was 1.46 in those children that I did not show any gingival bleeding. At the same time the presence of dental crowding was from the 98 percent in the children with gingivitis. As overall results the study population showed regular oral hygiene with an index of 1.79; also 49 (61 percent) of the patients had gingivitis, and 55 (69 percent) children had dental crowding, the most affected segment was the inferior with 58 percent. According to the gender and age no significant data was obtained, although in females crowding and bleeding was higher. Conclusions: The presence of gingivitis is related with the large amount of biofilm and dental crowding, this kind of malocclusion affects the majority of the population studied, and it is a problem that entails a number of consequences such as deficient oral hygiene that leads to gingival damages like the presence of inflammation and bleeding in this area.
