Resumen : | La leishmaniasis es una enfermedad tropical desatendida y transmitida por flebótomos del género Lutzomyia… |
Descripción : | Leishmaniasis is an important tropical disease transmitted by phlebotomine sandflies of Lutzomyia genus. Leishmaniasis is endemic in the majority of countries in southamerica (Amora, Bevilaqua, Feijó, Alves, and Maciel, 2009; Maroli, Feliciangeli, Bichaud, Charrel, and Gradoni, 2013). In Ecuador, the first report of host feeding sources in sandflies and identification of species was performed in Valle Hermoso, town located in Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas which is a hyperendemic area of presence of leishmaniasis (Anaguano et al., 2014). In this study we identified sandflies species, sandflies blood meals and determine their natural infection with Leishmania spp. in two locations corresponding to the provinces of Esmeraldas (Lagarto) and Chimborazo (Cumandá). Five sandflies species were identified: Pressatia dysponeta, Psychodopygus panamensis, Lutzomyia torture, reburra Trichophoromyia and Micropygomyia cayennensis. 136 engorged females were collected. Identified blood meal from chicken (64.7%), human (16.2%), livestock (1.5%), pig (0.7%) and unidentified wild mammal (11.8%). Moreover detected infection of Leishmania spp. in 47% of females collected. There is a clear preference of sand flies, both Lagarto and Cumandá, for fowl. Pressatia dysponeta was the most common specie of vector, with highest percentage of infection and increased preference frequency for fowl blood meals. The results obtained in this work, give an idea of the distribution of the vector, biology and ecology. Increasing the knowledge to the official map of distribution of the vector that allows better control of the disease in Ecuador. |
