| Descripción : | This research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of selenium in the treatment of chronic poisoning with Pteridium aquilinum in cattle, also known as bracken fern. A problem that affects most of the farms that sit in the foothills of the Andes, usually causing quite considerable economic losses and presenting a potential risk to public health due to the indirect poisoning that can be caused by consuming products from affected animals. Prevalence of Bovine Enzootic Haematuria as the result of chronic bracken fern poisoning, is 9.8%, resulting in a high rate of premature culling in the herds of the region. Likewise, 25.8 % prevalence of the disease has been reported in cattle slaughtered in the surrounding area, a situation of some concern because of the risk associated with the consumption of products from these animals... |
