| dc.description | In recent years, foreign policy in Brazil has taken a different path, placing priority on strengthening bilateral relations with South American states. Brazil has been widely considered as the nation most apt to assume a leadership role due to its strong demographic, geographic, political and economic influences in the region. This type of leadership role will support Brazil in its shift toward becoming a global power in the future. In the 21st Century, the South American governments have made a significant effort to construct an identity free of external influence; this has resulted in the creation of the Union of South American Nations, or UNASUR, based on its Spanish name. This investigation aims to assess the Brazilian case, including the possibility to assume a leadership role in South America and its endeavors to be recognized as a global power.
