The tannery industry worldwide not only represents economic growth for the communities, but is also a source of pollution to rivers and groundwaters. Liming effluent has high turbidity, organic load in the range of 10.000 to 30.000 mg/1 of COD and basic pH of 12. The goal of this study was to treat highly contaminated wastewaters using plant extracts of Caesalpinia spinose, Punica granatum, Eucalyptus spp. and Vitis vinifera. Natural coagulant extraction was performed using brine - acetone and concentration of phenol index was determined in the plants. In addition, experimental designs for determining the optimal dosage of coagulant and flocculent were raised. Plant extracts had a phenolic index between 8.17 mg/1 20.07 mg/1 with a removal of turbidity between 97-99 percent using 5 mi of coagulant and 2.5 mi of flocculent (polyacrylamide) in 500 mi of water residual liming. Final clarification was obtained with a hydrogen peroxide 5 percent solution which oxidized organic matter residuals from treated water. The present eco-friendly process enabled a remotion of chemical oxygen demand by 99.82 percent. The results suggest that aluminum polychlorides treatment of tannery liming drum wastewater could be replaced by an efficient process with plant extracts and hydrogen peroxide in benefit of the environment.en
