| Descripción : | Leishmaniasis is a zoonotic disease caused by protozoans of Leishmania genus. It is considered one of the most important diseases in the tropics with high incidendence in Latin America and Ecuador. The infection with the protozoan presents three different clinical forms: cutaneous, mucocutaneous and visceral. Traditional treatment of the disease includes the use of pentavalent antimonial compounds, which accumulate in the organism and lead to poisoning. The main issue to control the infection is related to the acquisition of resistance to current drug treatments, induced by the non-compliance of the medical indications. The present study tests the leishmanicidal activity of the extract of sparteine isolated from Lupinus mutabilis (Ecuadorian Andean lupine).
