dc.description | Smoking has been associated with a variety of oral diseases, including periodontal disease; studies in the past 20 years have indicated that smoking is probably a true risk factor for developing periodontal disease. The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of periodontal pockets in smokers and nonsmokers students between 20 and 25 years of the University de las Américas Faculty of Dentistry. The sample consisted of 40 smokers and 40 non-smoking students who will be selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. From each periodontal chart probing depth, attachment level and percentage of bleeding was analyze. The data obtained were analyzed using Bivariate test and Chi Square (p = 0.05). As a result it was observed that the smoking group had a higher value in probing depth (2.79 mm), while for the non-smoker group was (2.13 mm). The mean attachment level was (3.68 mm) for the smoker group and (3.12) mm for the nonsmoking group. The percentage of bleeding for no-smoking group was (18.35%) while for the smoker group was (11.45 %.). It is concluded that the level of insertion and probing depth were higher for the group of smokers, while the percentage of bleeding was higher for the group of non-smokers. | en |
