Descripción : Objective; To determine the influence of work shifts on occupational stress among resident physicians at the Second Level Hospital in the city of Riobamba. Methodology; The study had a quantitative approach, a non experimental, cross sectional, and field design. The census type sample consisted of 127 resident physicians working at the IESS Hospital; Riobamba Ecuador in 2023, who were surveyed. Questions from the Working Conditions and Health in Latin America questionnaires, and the GHQ12 questionnaire for distress were used. The statistical analysis was descriptive and multivariate. Results; There was a high percentage of stress in the study population. Only working hours., P value 0.023; ORC 1.76 and ORA 2.12., showed a statistically significant relationship with the physical manifestations of stress. However, a percentage analysis revealed several interesting aspects concerning stress, work shifts, and their explanatory variables. Conclusions; The majority of resident physicians in the study suffer from stress. The variables Working Hours vs Physical Manifestations of Stress represent the only association and statistically significant relationship with stress. Signs of stress are present in the age ranges between 25 to 29 years and 40 years or older. No gender distinction has been found for the presence of stress. Resident physicians who are operational and from other cities may have a higher probability of stress. And while the perception of health is excellent and very good, the majority do not exhibit stress.
