dc.descriptionIn the present titulation work, the construction of a dynamic model of the urban solid waste generation system associated with the population increase and other influencing factors for the Rumiñahui canton was carried out. The variables of greatest importance to the system were identified and also the relationships of influence between them. It was found that the generation of urban solid waste is mainly determined based on the Gross Domestic Product, population growth and the amount of recycled waste. A simulation of 3 scenarios was carried out over a period of 8 years (2013-2021): The first modeling the system based on GDP predictions for the year 2020; the second scenario contemplating a variation of the Gross Domestic Product in accordance with the current economic situation due to the COVID 19 health crisis; finally, a scenario where there is a significant growth in the fraction of recycled waste that reduces the generation of MSW during the year 2020. The model was validated by purchasing the output data with real data on the generation of MSW in the Rumiñahui canton. The importance of GDP as a variable closely related to the generation of MSW and the way in which a fall in it can affect the solid waste system were observed. It was determined that a significant increase in the recycling rate may have an impact on the generation of waste even greater than that obtained with a sharp drop in national GDP.en
