OBJECTIVE: Determine the impact of physical activity on people with hypertension who live in the Metropolitan District of Quito. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Retrospective cross sectional study reviewing data from the Salud al Paso program. The number of people with arterial hypertension and of those who perform physical activity at a general level and by parishes were calculated. The association between the physical activity variable, arterial hypertension and confusing variables through a Chi2 was also analyzed. Finally, the odds ratios were calculated through multiple regression. The variables analyzed were sex, age, BMI, smoker, alcohol, education and parish. RESULTS: Seven thousand one hundred and sixty people with arterial hypertension (12.55 percent); one thousand one hundred seventy-nine resided in ammonial 6 (2.07 percent). The Chi2 test determined a significant association between all the study variables except for the physical activity variable (p 0.311). Multiple regression found risk associations in the parish variable, zonal 2 (CI 1.376 - 1.725; P 0.001), zonal 3 (CI 1.054 - 1.328; P 0.004), zonal 4 (0.622 - 0.763; P 0.001) and zonal 9 (CI 1,105 - 1,459; P 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of hypertension was 12.55 percent. The zonal with the highest number of cases was the zonal 6 (2.07 percent). There was a significant association between all variables except the physical activity variable. The main risk factors were in zonal administrations 2, 3, 4 and 9.en
