| Resumen : | La investigación presente aborda el fenómeno conocido como la gentrificación, el cual tiene características urbanas y sociales, así como su desarrollo en el centro histórico de Quito, y especialmente en el barrio de la Loma Grande. Restringido exclusivamente a áreas urbanas, este fenómeno desemboca en el desplazamiento de ciudadanos de áreas particulares, además de acarrear otros efectos más inapreciables. El centro histórico de Quito, reconocido ampliamente como un patrimonio histórico y arquitectónico, ha visto el desenvolvimiento de estos procesos en el siglo en transcurso. Exponiendo casos documentados en otras latitudes del mundo, esta investigación describe los casos de gentrificación evidenciados en Quito. El trabajo se apoyó en el uso de varios métodos como la revisión de documentación pertinente, así como en la implementación de técnicas como la observación in situ, y la realización de entrevistas con fuentes familiarizadas con el tema de la gentrificación. En este respecto, las entrevistas realizadas a los moradores del barrio de la Loma Grande ayudaron abundantemente en lo que respecta a la captación de la dinámica de este sector. La investigación presenta que la gentrificación puede ser vista desde varios ángulos, no solamente desde el inmobiliario. Esto se evidencia en el centro histórico de la ciudad, específicamente en la calle La Ronda, donde hubo un proceso de gentrificación en la primera década del siglo XXI. En otro sector del centro histórico, específicamente en el barrio de la Loma Grande, esta investigación demuestra que la gentrificación podría implantarse debido a factores relacionados con la industria del turismo y la hospitalidad, según las fuentes consultadas a lo largo del desarrollo de esta investigación. Documentado a lo largo del tiempo y en varios lugares del mundo, los procesos de gentrificación parecen mostrar características mutables, ajustándose a contextos bastante específicos. Estos, no obstante, concluyen siempre en el desplazamiento de individuos de un sector determinado, contribuyendo con la pérdida de la memoria barrial y con la segmentación socioeconómica en las ciudades del mundo. |
| Descripción : | The work at hand addresses a phenomenon referred to as gentrification, imbued with both urban and social features, as well as its unfoldment in the historic district of Quito, and especially in a neighborhood referred to as Loma Grande. Restricted exclusively to urban areas, gentrification processes not only result in the displacement of individuals from given areas, but also carry further ramifications, often imperceptible. The historic district of Quito, widely recognized for housing a major historical and architectural heritage, has witnessed the development of such processes in the ongoing century. While illustrating some documented cases elsewhere in the planet, this work exposes some of the gentrification processes that have occurred in Quito. This piece of research was composed through various methods and techniques, including the reviewing of relevant literature, on-the-ground observation, and the coordination of interviews to sources familiar with the theme of gentrification. In this regard, the interviews made to some of the residents of the neighborhood of Loma Grande were quite helpful in that they proved avid in showing the daily goings-on of the neighborhood. This work presents the notion that gentrification is a phenomenon which may be seen as more than the removal of an individual from their dwelling. This notion is rather visible in the historic district of Quito, and particularly on a street by the name of La Ronda, where a gentrification process took place earlier in the ongoing century. Moreover, this work aims to showcase that a gentrification process may occur at the neighborhood of Loma Grande owning to factors related to the tourism industry, in accordance to the sources consulted for the purposes of this investigation. Having been documented in various places and throughout time, gentrification processes seem to have mutable features, being able to adjust to very specific contexts. Nonetheless, these result inevitably in the dispersion of individuals from particular areas, leading to the discontinuation of neighborhood memory and to socioeconomic segregation issues in urban areas. |
