Resumen : El presente trabajo parte de la premisa de que los Estados son objeto de represalias una vez que estos clasifican a los grupos armados no estatales que operan en sus territorios...
Descripción : This work is based on the assumption that States are subject to reprisals once they classify Non-State Armed Groups that operate in their territories. The objective of the investigation is to determine if the classification that the Ecuadorian State gives to Non-State Armed Groups that operate in its territory generates an increase in illicit activities directed against it. First, the three main categories of Non-State Armed Groups recognized by the international community are conceptualized, to then approach the rational choice theory, which explains the results of this investigation. The methodology used to determine if there is an increase in illicit activities compares the number of illicit activities committed before and after the classification of the Ecuadorian State. Only a two-year period (2017-2019), one year before and one year after the classification, was analyzed in order to establish the immediate effects of the classification. In this period of time, 10 events were registered in which 13 illicit activities with political motivations are carried out. Considering that all of them happened before the official classification of the State, it is determined that the classification does not increase the number of attacks against the State. In fact, the effect of classification is contrary to the assumption made and it shows that the State takes a decision that improves its previous situation and, by maximizing its utility, acts as a rational actor.
