This study sought to generate an alternative efficient management of used diapers in order to take advantage of cellulose and transform it from an environmental problem into raw material for other industrial processes. Bioremediation is one of the efficient alternatives that can be used to solve environmental contamination problems, taking advantage of the metabolic capacities of microorganisms capable of using waste as a necessary source of carbon for its metabolism. In the research, the bacterium Bacillus sp., Isolated in the Antarctic, was used, in which the activity of β-glucanase was evidenced, consequently, it has the capacity to use lignocellulosic material as a carbon source. Degradation tests were carried out on cotton from disposable diapers in Difco Bushnell-Haas Broth liquid mineral medium, in the presence of a small source of lignin (rice husk). The tests were carried out for 30 days under a constant temperature of 15 grades C. The influence of NPK on the cellulose degradation process was investigated. The transformation of cellulose into sugars was monitored with the help of the Somogyi-Nelson reagent, which allowed to measure the concentration of fermentable sugars by spectrophotometry. In addition, the brix degrees were measured, obtaining values of: 3.2, 4.8 and 5.6. The efficiency of the strain used was barely 2 percent, with the highest concentration of NPK. Keywords: Bacillus sp., Cellulose, enzymatic hydrolysis, lignocellulose, disposable diapers, fermentable sugars, Antarctica.en
