Organic matter can be a contaminant when it is in excess in wastewater. Organic matter contributes to eutrophication in rivers and lakes, a process that affects the biodiversity of ecosystems and the health of people. Activated sludge is a conventional biological treatment, which uses microorganisms to degrade organic matter in water. Advanced Fenton oxidation process is an unconventional chemical treatment, which, by using the Fenton reagent, oxidizes organic matter by chemical reactions in the presence of a catalyst. The present study focuses on the comparison between these technologies; activated sludge and advanced oxidation Fenton process in terms of the removal of the organic matter coming from the wastewater from the source of the Machángara River. Both technologies were executed at a laboratory scale, implementing a factorial experimental design for both treatments. The best results were calculated for their respective removal efficiencies, to be then analyzed with statistical analysis through the analysis of variance. A Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5) removal of 76.9percent was obtained in the active sludge process, with the conditions of a nutrient dose of 0.5 mg and a retention time of 6 hours, while the best result for Advanced oxidation Fenton process was a 97.3percent removal of BOD5, with a dose of Fenton reagent of 0.5 mg and an exposure time to ultraviolet light of 6 hours. It was determined that the Fenton advanced oxidation process is an effective technology for the removal of organic matter, since it removed more organic matter than the conventional treatment.en
