Resumen : El presente estudio fue realizado en el Colegio Andino, ubicado en la parroquia de Chaupicruz, centro/norte de la ciudad de Quito...
Descripción : The present study was carried out in the Andino School, located in the parish of Chaupicruz, center - north of the city of Quito. The objective was to evaluate the level of knowledge of parents about the influence of the diet on the prevalence of caries of students from 7 to 10 years old of the Andino-Quito school. With a 46% acceptance of all the participants, the parents with a higher level of education, that is of fourth level, represented 33.33% of the respondents compared with those who only completed the third level, which included 42,59%, while 22.22% of the participants had only finished their High School studies. The remaining percentage, 1.85%, preferred not to answer. Of the results obtained, the children of those who attended the High School have an average incidence of 2.5 caries per child, thus giving 46.8% more caries than the children of parents who attended a Graduate School, with an incidence of 1,3 caries. The children of parents who only studied the baccalaureate have an average of 2.1 caries, with 16% more cavities than the children of parents who attended the fourth level. Comparing the gender of the participants there were 42.59% men and 57.41% women. The frequency of caries was higher in women than in men due to many factors such as hormonal and physiological. 96% of the participants were interested in learning and knowing how to feed their children in a better way. 65% of children brushed their teeth twice a day and 26% three times a day, this means that many of the parents do not follow proper control and do not give enough importance to the oral hygiene of their children. It is evident that 72% of all participants do not follow the indications given by their dentists or simply do not go to the dentist, thus increasing the risk of a higher incidence of caries for children. The result is inversely proportional; this means that the more knowledge of the parents decreases considerably the number of caries.
