Descripción : Introduction: Radical prostatectomy alters the balance between the bladder detrusor and the sphincter system, inducing stress urinary incontinence in males. A noninvasive treatment is applied for strength the pelvic floor muscles; through Kegel exercises can be used in order to induce a perineal block. Moreover, it is possible to activate and strengthen the pelvic muscles through the stimulation of the Core muscles given the existence of positive feedback between the two muscle groups. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of Kegel exercises in combination with the strengthening of the Core muscles, in order to treat the urinary incontinence induced by radical prostatectomy. Methods and materials: Twenty patients between the ages of 65 and 85 with stress urinary incontinence as a consequence of radical prostatectomy participated in this study. The subjects were divided into four groups: a first group Kegel, where Kegel exercises where tested, a second group Core, where patients used Core exercises for muscle strengthening, a third group combined, where subjects used both techniques, Kegel exercises and Core strengthening, and the last group Control where subjects continued using conventional medical treatment. Patients which had previously done rehabilitation for the pelvic floor and subjects with an altered urinary function caused by neurological injuries were excluded. The patients did 12 exercise sessions in a four-week period. Two evaluations with three questionnaires each were performed in order to register the results, one before treatment and one after treatment, the questionnaires used were as follows: ICIQ-SF questionnaire, Mouristen classification and PERFECT muscular strength test. The aim of the questionnaires was to evaluate urinary incontinence symptoms, sphincter functions and quality of contraction of the pelvic floor. Ver archivo adjunto…
