Descripción : The masseter is one of the main muscles involved in highly complex motor tasks; surface electromyography allows us to assess its normal function as well as the analysis of pathological alterations. The aim of this study was to identify the muscular activity of the masseter of patients between 18 and 25 years of age with different facial biotypes. Sixty participants (30 men and 30 women) were recruited, with an average age of 21, 25 years. The muscular activity was measured by the placement of electrodes to capture the activity generated in the muscle. Activity was evidenced during the resting phase, but it was minimal in comparison to the maximum intercuspation and maximum opening records. The results show a greater activity of the masseter muscle in individuals of brachiocephalic biotype followed by the mesocephalic ones and to end dolichocephalic subjects that present less muscular activity. It is elementary to take into account that they obtained larger ranges during the stage of maximum intercuspation in the right side masseter muscle, regardless of the age and gender of the study subject. The electromyographic study is of great help in diagnosing muscular dysfunctions that are not usually recognized during a clinical inspection. However, it is necessary to use other instruments to perform a biomechanical analysis of the stomatognathic system.
