Descripción : No doubt that the eating behavior disorders have come to be an important part of a transition of culture in general. Several authors have found that families of patients with anorexia nervosa have certain characteristics that differ from control families. Given this scenario, the present study aims to identify the characteristics of family functioning from the perspective of patients with anorexia nervosa, and which of them act as risk (onset or maintenance) in the symptomatic condition. The sample was composed of patients from several centers and therapeutic consultations diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa and residing in the city of Quito. To reach this goal, they raised several research tools: documents and medical records, the genogram and the unstructured interview. The construction of categories was conducted through Grounded Theory where the data was first found in the story of the patient, to build several categories concerning the components that make up the overall functioning of the family. Keeping the subjectivity of perception of each of the informants, the results indicate that the characteristics of family functioning are dysfunctional in its structure, interactions, communication, and coping strategies in the face of conflict, to be highly influential in the development and anorexia symptoms maintenance.
