| Descripción : | Poverty during childhood places children in a disadvantaged condition, hindering them to fully develop their potential and achieve a future with equal opportunities. This investigation attempts to find evidence of how poverty in Ecuador determines the manner in which households decide to allocate their children time. Using a household-level utility model that considers three possible events for children (work, work and education or only education), it finds that households lacking assets and living in deficient housing conditions, are more likely to make their children work instead of exclusively sending them to school. In general, a higher income benefits time spent in education. However, in households with the lowest levels of income, small income increases do not modify their children’s time allocation regarding work and education. |
