In the United States EE.UU., the use of electronic cigarettes has increased dramatically from 2011 to 2015 in the general population and approximately 900 percent among adolescents. In 2016, 3.2 percent of adults and 11.3 percent of US high school students in this country reported using electronic cigarettes. These figures are alarming in terms of a vulnerable population such as adolescents. Therefore, in this study an analysis of the use of electronic cigarettes in a teenage population between 13 and 17 years old attending schools in EE.UU. in 2015 is carried out. Obesity has become a serious public health concern in the 21st century globally. The worldwide prevalence of childhood obesity has increased markedly in the last 3 decades. The increase in obesity prevalence has also led to the appearance of comorbid diseases related to this condition at an early age. It can negatively affect almost all organ systems and often has serious outcomes, such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, fatty liver disease and psychosocial involvement. On this, it contributes in an important way increasing health expenses. It should be noted that during the same period from 2011 to 2015, the prevalence of overweight and obesity has also shown an impetuous increase among adolescents. Since, an amplification of the prevalence of both electronic cigarette use and overweight and obesity in adolescents has been observed, and, taking into account the use of cigarettes as a method to reduce or control weight, this question has been raised: Is there an association between overweight and obesity and the use of electronic cigarettes in the adolescent population between 13 and 17 years of age, in 2015, in EE. UU.? To answer this disturbing question, a quantitative analysis of the data collected from the 2015 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System YRBSS, which is an anonymous survey based on schools, has been carried out in EE.UU. Taking as an exposure variable the use of electronic cigarette and the result variable as the self-reported weight and height, associated in one variable, the BMI Body Mass Index. Overweight and obesity in the adolescent population are defined as having a BMI in percentiles less to 85 and less to 95, respectively. Those who did not answer questions about the use of electronic cigarettes and who did not report weight or height were excluded. The independent association between the use of the electronic cigarette and the BMI in the sample was evaluated through the use of binary logistic regression after adjustment for confusing variables, such as: race ethnicity, current cigarette consumption, current tobacco use that is not It generates smoke and intends to lose weight. Statistical significance was defined at an alpha level of 0.05. For the analysis, male students represented 49.5 percent of the total sample N equal 12,170. The findings suggest that there is a significant association between overweight and obesity and current cigarette consumption OR equal 1.58; 95 percent CI equal 1.24 to 2.00, current use of smokeless tobacco OR equal 2.02; 95 percent CI equal 1.44-285, be black African American OR equal 1.57; 95 percent CI equal 1.25 to 1.97 or Hispanic OR equal 1.40; 95 percent CI equal 1.19 to 1.67, and among subjects trying to lose weight OR equal 5.48; 95 percent CI equal 4.64 to 6.47. However, the results did not evoke a significant association between electronic cigarette use and overweight or obesity OR equal 0.91; 95 percent CI equal 0.72 to 1.14.en
