Descripción : Background: Cycling is a widely accepted activity worldwide among men and women, of all age groups and all countries of the world. This activity is not only considered as an exercise but as an effective means of transport. The growth of the rate of cyclists in each of the populations, added to the poor local and international regulations, has generated that the victims of windings, road accidents and traffic accidents related to cycling have increased considerably in the last 30 years. This study seeks to identify the main causes of death among cyclists in Ecuador, as well as the epidemiological burden, mortality and sociodemographic factors related to this problem in Ecuador. Methodology: A descriptive observational epidemiological study of crosssectional type was made using the secondary source data that are stored in the databases of deaths of the National Institute of Statistics and Census in Ecuador (INEC) from 2001 to 2017. For the identification of cases related to cycling all the records identified as V10 to V19 were identified according to the international code of diseases 10th edition (ICD-10). Results: In Ecuador since 2001, a total of 317 deaths among cyclists have been reported, 91 percent in men (n equal 273) and 9 percent in women (n equal 44). The province with the highest death rate was Santa Elena for men with a rate of 0.8 per 100,000 inhabitants and Morona Santiago with a rate of 0.139 per 100,000 women. You all traffic accidents, bicycle accidents represent less than 1 percent in Men and Women. 84 percent of deaths occur in urban areas and 16 percent in rural areas. In turn, the great majority of fatalities occur in people with low levels of schooling (75 percent did not pass the secondary) and the vast majority are mestizos with 72.9 percent with marital status as single (51 percent). Conclusions: Traffic accidents are responsible for the great majority of deaths of cyclists in Ecuador. Men are exposed to a much higher risk of dying than women, and they are even 30 times higher in adolescents and young adults. This is the first epidemiological study of this type that is carried out in Ecuador with a cantonal and provincial resolution for all the variables studied.
