Descripción : La Mariscal is located in the north center of Quito, being one of the thirty two urban parishes that form the central region of the Metropolitan District. Although in the last several years it has reduced in population, this area maintains a high concentration of tourism and commerce among hotels, restaurants, bars, and discos, as well as souvenir, handicrafts, and clothing shops. The La Mariscal craft market is currently a key cultural and social hub within the economic ecosystem of the area. However, the market suffers from inadequate business infrastructure, because it was designed without the benefit of architectural guidance or the forethought common to urban planning. This, along with business advising concerns among shop co owners and craftsmen has also caused issues regarding poor distribution and promotion of the craft work beyond the market itself. To improve this sector, there is an urban rehabilitation plan in place, which is divided into nine different areas for study. The primary objective of this plan is the relocation of existing equipment and infrastructure to La Mariscal, and new comprehensive projects to provide space for high quality housing and commercial properties. The proposal for this project is the total restructuring of the market in order to generate a higher level of commerce while maintaining its essential character; the direct connection with the street and the intimate interrelations between tourists and merchants. This market can be a positive contribution to the rehabilitation plan within the sector, dedicated to maintaining a comfortable, engaging environment for the many domestic and foreign tourists who visit it daily to experience the wide variety of vibrant sounds, sights, souvenirs, and experiences on offer in La Mariscal.
