Descripción : La Mena 2 being the largest neighborhood in the Metropolitan District of Quito has a population of 7,965 people residing in 2,278 households (INEC, 2010). The present study shows the condition of pet ownership in the La Mena 2 neighborhood, through an adaptation of the street canine accounting model from "World Animal Protection" (WAP, 2007), in addition to a survey and statistical analysis. The WAP method allowed the selection of households to be surveyed through the creation of housing blocks. The execution of the poll in addition to allowing the registration of the number and type of pets, helped to assess the conditions of possession of dogs and cats of the surveyed population. the description of the poll population was takins on account, covering topics such as: species, gender, sterilization, breed, origin, type of food, frequency of feeding, walking, habitat, deworming, immunization, service for immunization, importance on responsible tenure and zoonotic diseases. A total population of 1208 people were found among 266 households surveyed of 329 families within the poll. A total population of 310 pets was presented, of which 80.6 percent were canines, 15.2 percent were feline. The remaining 4.2 percent represented farm or exotic pets (other pets), among fish, parakeets, rabbits, etc., and did not meet the requirements to assess their tenure status. For this reason, they were only taken accounted. The percentage of pet owners that follow the bylaw (municipal Ordinance) 048 is 42.2 percent. Under this concept it is recommended to conduct awareness campaigns to the community on responsible ownership, in the same way it is recommended to make more detailed studies on animal welfare.
