Descripción : Tropospheric O3 is a secondary atmospheric pollutant formed by photochemical reactions, and if exceeded certain levels, can seriously affect human health and the environment. In the city of Quito in the months of June, August, September and October due to greater solar radiation, ozone concentrations often violate health standards. For this reason, this thesis aimed to study the influence of O3 on the morphology of two plant species used in vertical gardens. The experiment was conducted in three micro-greenhouses with similar environmental conditions for the two plant species with the only variable to change – the ozone concentrations. The experiment was carried out from October 14 until November 18, 2017. The species used were the Malamadre (Chlorophytum comosum) and Jade Plant (Crassula ovata). The results revealed that there is morphological variation in the parameters of height, weight, leaf size, number of leaves and at the microscopic level in the two species. However, the species that showed the better resistance was the Jade Plant, since its results showed that there are no significant changes in the presence of high doses of O3. Therefore, based on the findings of this study, we recommend Jade Plant for the vertical garden application in the cities with elevated pollution.
