Descripción : In 2013, Ecuador modified the RTE INEN regulation: 022-2013, implementing the graphic system of food labeling. Where it establishes, that the food processing industry has as an obligation for the commercialization of its products to declare the amount of sugar, fat and salt nutrients through a graphic system of colors (red, yellow and green), depending on its concentration. The present study has as objectives to determine the knowledge, establish the frequency of use and evaluate the way of use of the traffic light in the choice of food by the mothers of District No. 01 of the MDQ (Calderón, Carapungo and Guayllabamba). The participants were mostly women with an average age of 36 more less 12 years and with an average of 15 more less 3 years of education. A survey was applied to 114 residents of District No. 01 after making their purchases in supermarkets and markets. Several quantitative and qualitative analyzes of the descriptive statistics, Tukey tests, ANOVA analysis with the data of the focal group were carried out. It was obtained as a result that the moradores of the district No.1 had knowledge of the labeling of foods in 84 percent in the supermarkets and 54 percent in the markets, they use it frequently in a 48 percent “always” and “almost always” 'in supermarkets and in markets at 44 percent. In supermarkets it is used in 42 percent to choose the products that they buy and they are fixed in all the nutrients of the semaphore in 40 percent. The way of use of the nutritional traffic light in more than 28 percent is to improve their health, since with 92 percent they feel benefit and therefore their eating habits have changed. In the focus group it was evidenced that the moradores felt a positive perception towards the nutritional semaphore. In the purchase of supplies for a healthy lunch, they used the nutritional semaphore to better choose the most nutritious food. It can be concluded, that the moradoras use the nutritional semaphore to be informed of the 3 nutrients that the products have since it helps them to take care of their health and that of their family.
