At present, it is known that the number of stray dogs in the city of Quito is high however, it is not known exactly how many dogs actually exist due to the lack of investigations. The objective of this study was to conduct a demographic characterization of stray dogs in 6 markets of the South of the city of Quito in a period from October to November 2017. The selection of the 6 Southern Markets of the city was random; the sampling was carried out twice a week inside and outside each market, identifying each stray dog by direct observation, by means of a photograph and registering each individual according to their age, sex and whether or not they had an owner. The study resulted in a total of 143 dogs, of which 60.10 percent were males, and 39.90 percent were females. Finally, the two markets that had the highest number of dogs were selected and a chat was held on responsible pet ownership and public health, after this each of the results were evaluated with frequency tables and descriptive statistics.en
