For the removal of tooth decay the most instrument is high velocity handpiece, in which is exposed contaminated particles can pose a risk to patients and dentist. In the mouth cavity there are many microorganisms that can introduce infections pathogens, the use of the high velocity handpiece leads to the appearance of aerosol that it is constituted for saliva, water, blood, that can potentially contaminated the instrument itself. The objective of this research investigation was to determinate whether or not the high velocity handpiece is contaminated when removing tooth decay and to identify which types of microorganism were present. The sample was made up of twenty high velocity handpiece and for the collection it was used a sterile cotton swabs were used in circular motions over high velocity handpiece body, the research team used the Stuart means of transportation in order to cultivate the organisms in sample dishes of blood agar and macconkey agar for their excellent properties, the samples were placed in an incubator for 48 hours at 37°C. Of the 100% of the samples of removed tooth decay, 87.5% did not present with contamination. Only 12.5% presented with contamination by microorganism in this case they were Streptococcus mutans, a gram positive microorganism. Of the samples from opening molar crown, 100% did not present with contamination. The results established that the reason that contamination was not present could be because of the implementation of biosecurity on the part of the dentist, or because the irrigation system of the high velocity handpiece, an aerosol-based system whit contact the air leads to the destruction of the bacteria as the water evaporates. However, this was not determined in this study because it was not the objective.en
