Descripción : Chronic Periodontitis is an infection characterized by the presence of deep periodontal pockets, dental mobility and the destruction of the support for the dental pieces, this disease is considerably increased in the adulthood. There are several factors such as dental plaque, gingival pathologies, systemic diseases, age, etc. Objective: Determine the prevalence of chronic periodontitis in a sample of patients with an age range from 35 to 75 years at the UDLA Dental Clinic. Materials and Methods: The study was carried out at the UDLA Dental Clinic, being a transversal, descriptive and retrospective investigation. There was a deep search of clinical histories and the review of each one was placed inside an Excel document with the following fields: history number, age, gender, date of attention, personal record, periodontal diagnosis and education level. Results: The sample consisted in 500 histories in which were found 53 patients with chronic periodontitis. Male patients had more prevalence of chronic periodontitis with 58,5% and female patients had 41,5%. In age range 26,4% belonged to patients between 35-40 years, 52,8% in patients inside the range of 41 to 59 years and 20,8% in patients with more than 60 years. Severe generalized chronic periodontitis with 47,2% was the predominant disease. The prevalence comparing the disease with education level was 28,3% with initial education, 45,2% with secondary education and 26,4% with university studies. Conclusions: Prevalence of the disease represented 11%. Male patients were more affected than females. Prevalent ages were between 41 to 59 years. Chronic periodontitis is deeply related to the education level; the less education infers more prevalence of the disease.
