| Descripción : | OBJECTIVE: To determine the most common reason for the placement of orthodontic appliances in patients from 20 to 35 years of age who attend the clinic of the Universidad De Las Americas. Different fields are related to get to know the reason why adult patients undergo an orthodontic treatment that focuses on three aspects for analysis in functional, causal and psychosocial. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The current research is a cross-sectional descriptive model carried out in the UDLA orthodontic postgraduate clinic. The collection of data was achieved through surveys that were made to patients in which focused on the aspects of function, causal and psychosocial and asked the doctors treating the patient to give a diagnosis of Angle malocclusion of each patient. The sample was made to 60 patients to identify their motive if it is due to bad habits, for some reasons or because of their self-esteem and importance that this treatment presents. Statistical tables analyzed the data. RESULTS: This indicates that in relation to bad oral habits: labial suction with one (45%), in the causal indicator for crooked teeth one (77%), in psychosocial field (52%), and in the diagnosis analysis of Angle malocclusion with one (45%) in the total number of patients observed by the postgraduate doctors. CONCLUSIONS: The most common reason for all the above, there is a clear tendency that people chose to undergo orthodontic treatment to improve their physical appearance, that is, it is merely aesthetic. |
