Descripción : Antihistamines are described as drugs used to reduce and eliminate the sequelae and consequences produced by histamine, which intervene in the blockade of this chemical substance that is released by the body during hypersensitivity reactions and captured by histamine receptors H1, H2, H3 and H4. In order to know the correct use of antihistamines in dentistry, this bibliographical review was carried out, in which 45 indexed articles of the last six years were taken into account. The main findings were that in dentistry, antihistamines are used primarily for the treatment of allergies (first and second generation H1), as adjuncts to sedation (first generation H1) and for oral manifestations of ulceropeptic disease (H2). The second-generation H1 antihistamines (desloratadine) are increasingly used because they have fewer undesirable reactions than the first generation H1. The most used in the dental clinic are: H1 first generation: diphenhydramine, dexchlorpheniramine, hydroxycin, cinnarizine, second generation H1: loratadine, dexloratadine, H2: ranitidine, cimetidine, famitidine and nizatidine. It was concluded that there are three fundamental types of antihistamines; the H1 of first and second generation and the H2, each group with its pharmacological characteristics and precise indications in the dental clinic.
