Descripción : This research was developed in the city of Quito, at the University of the Americas, with the purpose of proposing an alternative of floating material to be used in hydroponic crops, with the aim of replacing a material that is currently used; Expanded polystyrene flex foam. The proposal was based on the preparation of the material with a waterproofing coating, using beeswax and carnauba wax, another important material in the banana fiber and palm obtained from the agroindustrial waste. For the elaboration of the prototypes can do of homemade way or industrial, and does not intervene any chemical in its elaboration. The variables were measured at the Salesian Polytechnic University located in the city of Cuenca. Where the physical tests of hardness, compression and flexion were carried out. To make a comparison with the physical characteristics of the flex foam of expanded polystyrene. Which was obtained as a result in the material material with the base of palm fiber with the carnauba wax coating. Therefore using the prototype of floating material brings benefits such as, easy manufacture, materials are feasible and finalize their life cycle are environmentally friendly, because their degradation does not require chemicals for which the Its manufacture of plant origin, making the proposed alternative to the benefit of the farmer and the soil. The prototypes are physical and microbiological tests, in order to obtain all the necessary data, to know the characteristics of the prototypes. With the statistical data obtained by the analysis, the prototype is known to be suitable for the substitute of expanded polystyrene.
