Resumen : La actividad petrolera en el Ecuador es una de las principales fuentes de ingreso para el país, sin embargo como consecuencia de la explotación se produce la contaminación de la biosfera...
Descripción : Oil industry has produced an important income for Ecuador, nevertheless pollution of the biosphere is a direct consequence of the exploitation. Remediation biotechnological techniques apply biological fundaments to treat polluted environments, they appear more practical when compared with physicochemical techniques because of the lower costs and less unitary operations during the process. The aim of this project was to isolate and characterize crude oil degrading bacterial strains, obtained from crude oil contaminated samples from the treatment platform “El Salado” (Napo, Ecuador). To attain this, the strains were selected from a formulated media containing crude oil as the only carbon source. Samples were diluted and inoculated in media with crude oil (0.5 por ciento and 0.7 por ciento). All the strains that grew were isolated in nutrient agar. Gram stain and observation of the cell morphology were useful into defining the tests for biochemical characterization (growth on TSI agar, growth on MacConkey agar, oxidase y catalase). The results showed that microbial growth from analyzed samples was not significantly different between the two different crude oil concentrations used neither between locations. Nine strains were isolated and the obtained data was used to determine the possible genera these crude-oilmetabolizing bacteria could belong to. The bacteria found might have high degradation rates using biostimulation or by themselves, being suitable for the remediation of polluted environments.
